GDC 2025 to Host Reveal of New ESA Accessibility Initiative in March with EA, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo and Ubisoft

Improving accessibility is a crucial topic in game development, and some of the industry's top minds are coming together at GDC 2025 to share how developers can collaborate toward its advancement.

Tens of millions of Americans live with some form of disability, and the video game industry is continuing to work to ensure that more people can experience the power of play. Join Entertainment Software Association Senior Vice President Aubrey Quinn, renowned accessibility consultant, speaker and journalist Paul Amadeus Lane and accessibility leaders from five tech and video game companies - Electronic Arts, Google, Microsoft, Nintendo of America and Ubisoft – to learn about a new accessibility initiative meant to improve the player experience for more people. Additionally, hear from panel participants about the importance of coming together as a coalition for the benefit of the greater player community.

The full details of this initiative will be revealed during the GDC Main Stage presentation at the Moscone Convention Center’s West Hall Lobby Level on Thursday, March 20 as part of the 39th annual Game Developers Conference, which will be held from March 17 - 21. 10 CHAMBERS UNVEILS DEN OF WOLVES GAMEPLAY TRAILER AT THE GAME AWARDS

Swedish game developer 10 Chambers premiered the first gameplay trailer for their upcoming game Den of Wolves during The Game Awards 2024. The game is led by Creative Director Ulf Andersson, creator of the critically acclaimed heist games Payday: THE HEIST and PAYDAY 2. The trailer opened with a sweeping shot of Midway City's corporate-dominated skyline, where massive skyscrapers bearing the logos of powerful corporations pierce the clouds, setting the stage for this ambitious new cooperative heist game. Then it jumps right into gameplay heisting. 

Den of Wolves is a 4-player cooperative first-person shooter that evolves the heist genre by combining traditional infiltration gameplay with a unique neural hacking element. 

“Even if I have my backstory with PAYDAY: The Heist and PAYDAY 2, that is over ten years ago, so I’ve evolved as a developer and a creative. Den of Wolves comes as much from our latest game, GTFO, as from the PAYDAY days. We will elevate what a heist game can be – what a heist can be. You can only rob so many banks,” says Ulf Andersson, Creative Director at 10 Chambers.

The game takes place in Midway City, a corporate free zone established in 2035 through Project HOPLON. Built on the remote Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, the city was created to respond to devastating AI-driven cyber attacks that nearly collapsed the global economy in the early 2030s. What began as a high-security corporate zone designed to protect critical financial and technological infrastructure has evolved into a dystopian metropolis where corporations operate with unlimited power and minimal oversight.

“Even though Den of Wolves is not an open-world game, we’ve put a lot of time and resources into building the world around you. With everything from the in-depth backstory about why we are where we are, to the brands and corporations that build up the city – each with their independent backstories,” says Oscar J-T Holm, co-founder of 10 Chambers. “Even if you are not a fan of following the lore of the game, we believe that just knowing there are these stories around you builds a powerful purpose to playing.”

Players will explore various districts within Midway City, each with its own distinct character and controlling corporate interests. The first district available at launch will be Promise District, controlled by the powerful USTMAN SACS corporation. Promise District features a dramatic vertical design where social status determines altitude - from the luxurious upper levels reserved for corporate elites to the deteriorating slums below. In this environment of extreme inequality and corporate control, players must navigate advanced surveillance systems and corrupt security forces to execute their heists.

At the end of the trailer, a release date is revealed—at least parts of it.

Wanstrath co-created GitHub in 2007 and served as the company’s CEO for eight years culminating in its acquisition by Microsoft in 2018. Wanstrath is utilizing his background to create a healthier, more sustainable game development environment through Null Games.

MEGA CAT DEBUTS BITE THE BULLET AND LOG JAMMERS DEMOS AHEAD OF THE STEAM GAME FESTIVAL

With the Steam Game Festival around the corner, indie developer Mega Cat Studios is kicking off the celebration early with exclusive game demos and Discord-focused events for Bite the Bullet and for Log Jammers. Bite the Bullet is the studio’s long-awaited run and gun and eat, a reimagining of the Metal Slug formula that incorporates roguelite elements, expansive skill trees, and stomach-based weapon crafting. Log Jammers, originally released as a new NES title, is a lightning-fast lumber-themed party game where players volley axes back and forth to score goals or to eliminate opposing cheerleaders.

Both of these games were scheduled for significant convention time in 2020, but with those events shuttered for now, Mega Cat is looking to capture the energy of gaming communities online.

“Losing so many face-to-face event opportunities with players has been hard for us,” James Deighan, Mega Cat Studios founder, says. “Gaming conventions aren’t just about promoting your game. They’re about making real connections with players and gathering one-of-a-kind feedback on your project. It’s exciting to see Steam step in to help fill that void, and we hope to build on that with more virtual player gatherings on Discord.”

That means in addition to playable demos in the Steam Game Festival, Mega Cat is teeing up coordinated events around co-op runs of Bite the Bullet, competitive matches in Log Jammers, and community free-for-alls with other multiplayer titles and trivia games.

It won’t be the same as being on the floor at an event like PAX, but Mega Cat hopes it will help bring gamers together.

“One of the magical parts of going to a convention is going booth to booth to try a bunch of games and ending up standing next to a complete stranger,” Deighan says. “But you’re playing the same game and sharing that new world and new gameplay, and suddenly you are swapping Discord handles and meeting up later in the free play area for a one-shot DnD session.

“With the Steam Game Festival and tools like Discord, maybe we can still enjoy some of that magic,” Deighan says.

Exit the Gungeon is a bullet hell dungeon climber immediately following the adventures of the misfit “Gungeoneers” and their journey for personal absolution in Enter the Gungeon. Spoilers: The Gungeon has become a paradox and is collapsing.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain is like if Starship Troopers was a Saturday Morning Cartoon with its own licensed cereal made with acid marshmallows. This is a good thing.

Since it first launched in 2003 for the PlayStation 2 console, the Earth Defense Force has garnered a cult but loyal following for its bug filled wave shooter gameplay. My old boss at a gaming site I worked for made the EDF series a day one pick up for him whenever a new one launched. I often thought it was a strange franchise to treat as you Madden (a game you get every year despite minor changes) but then again I used to by the WWE games all the time.

In a way EDF is the Dynasty Warriors of giant insect kaiju monster games with its over the top B-movie dialogue and insane cities under siege premise. All those charming features still return but in the tightest, most feature packed version of the franchise yet. When I had a chance to check out the game at a press event put on by publisher D3 I worried I may have felt that this was yet ANOTHER EDF game but instead the game made me feel like I was watching an old familiar Saturday morning cartoons and eating cereal made with acid. Yes that may sound odd but so is liking the game. Its just fun! Its something familiar yet just oddly satisfying.

The wacky banter and silly settings made me crack up so many times during the demo. When playing in the area patterned on San Francisco I kept on thinking the scenario in EDF may be the only way I can afford a house in SF.

Developed by the same company that may of my favorite wrestling games. YUKE’s Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain is the best-looking EDF to date and includes over 50 intense, story driven missions.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain also features a pretty fun multiplayer battle mode. Online supports up to six player co-op – and the new Mercenary mode, which finds teams competing for Energy Gems hosts up to 8 players. This mode was super fun as it also makes use of the plethora of customization options in the game. During my session I gave my player an ant head and chose the brand-new Prowl Rider class. This class gives you the ability to ride on top of some of the giant insects. It also you to launch yourself across the battlefield in a way that made me felt I was playing a different take on Attack On Titan.

Black Future '88 is coming soon to the Nintendo Switch as a console exclusive! Players can grab a friend and fight to conquer a constantly evolving tower in the game's local Co-Op mode which supports individual JoyCon play for two players in both handheld and docked modes.

The game was already announced for PC and was one of my top games at last years E3 via an event put on by publisher Good Shepard.
